In this video we learn how two characters can have and win/lose an argument without any speech. The two images below show how both characters are confident and can look each other (the camera) in the eye.
Eventually the viewpoints of the characters alter and the camera angles change because of this. As you can see in the images below.
From these frames we can see that clairece is slightly lower and is no longer looking at the camera. This shows that Dr. Lecter is now winning. This is because clarice is now lower than he is and she can no longer look at the camera, showing he is in control.
I can use this in my production to create a fight and show who is winning without dialogue. This will be really useful in units 9 and 10 but also in all other productions I make. |

In this video we learn that the framing a shot is extremely important. How the Subject fits in the background and their ratio to one another.
From the images you can see above we learn that the character on the left is a 'small man' in a very big room and that leaves him looking powerless, whereas on the right is a 'big man' in a small room giving us the impression that he has all the power.
We can use this in our production to show who is in charge and to also show how peoples powers change and the confidence can either increase or decrease. |
|
From this video (left) we can learn that using default foley sounds or even actual sounds recorded on the day is just not enough if you want the production to be professional. We see this at 1:26 when the clubs audio was added after to give the post production team a better chance of making the audio just that little bit better. In Fight club they looked at how other movies had made foley sounds and said 'no'. They thought it wasn't real enough and just experimented until the sounds worked and were realistic. Just look at 2:19 vs 2:37, Both of these snippets are from successful films but just that attention to detail can make the film so much more realistic and can trick the audience.

The parts of this short film that really stood out to me was the colour. This not just being th colour added to the clips but aslo how it was lit while they were filming. The colours they use fit our genre perfectly as this film could be classed as a thriller too, but i see it as more of a mysterious movie setting, especially the way the film the depth of field shots.

In this clip from ‘Berberian Sound Studio’ we realise how important sound is to a film. In this 2 minute clip we hear a variety of sounds that will make any thriller better. They use sound to create emotions from the viewer such as disgust or shock. The fact that this film is based around a sound studio making Foley sounds shows that sound should and is a big factor in anything. The sounds feel even more real because it is based in a sound studio but also that the viewer is seeing and hearing two almost identical things. This movie is based around sound and although it does it very well, not every movie can be about a sound studio. For example not all of the movie will be filmed in the studio and when the audience think that they only use Foley sounds in the studio is when the film can really progress.
At 1:11 we see Toby Jones hitting cabbage with a knife and dropping it in some sort of watery mix. We can assume this will be used to scare someone as it sounds like a head being chopped off. The music is that effective that is can show something completely different to a head being chopped of and we still understand what it means.

As this is a proffesional tv series it combines the best of both productions talked about above. We really feel the emotion through sound a colour in this episode. I think what really stands out for me is how they can merge the characters in and out of their surroundings using lighting. This creates the effect that they are moving in and out of thought. It really pushes the point of the show across and can isolate feellings and push them on to the viewer.

I am obviously looking into this music video because it is all about romance just like our music video, it really tells a story but also keeps the viewer knowing something new everyframe. The way they have planned this keeps the viewer thinking what happens next, and you could even watch it a second time a see a completely different video to what you saw first time. I want to intergrate this into my production as it will make it look more proffesional and also just be more entertaining.

This music video, although not directly romantic, really goes through the rollercoaster that is life nd brings it home to people what it is like to be happy and then sad. It is just a fast forwarded version of any persons life, this means it connects to everyone who watches it, you don't even need the music. The fact that it shows that someone is always on and by your side through every step of life really touched me and i want to bring this through to my music video.

The title of this video suggests it is all about people needing someone to make them who they could be. This is why i found this music video so interesting, It is the physical form of don't judge a book by it's cover. This music video is telling people that you can find ways to be better than yourself in life, the way they do this is to show two parts of the music video. One where he is by himself and he is happy but the second part really exajurates what having an extra person in your life can be like. The colour changes throughout the video, i'm not saying it starts grey but it deffinately gets brighter and yellower. All of these music videos use yellow as a happy colour and i should definatley consider this when making my production.

Analysis
The key tips you can take from this tutorial
From this video I have learnt that the main things I will need to include in my production will be Foley sound, music and camera angles, to do this I take these example very seriously and make sure that I spend a lot of time focusing on the sound, camera angles and music.
How will these help you with your production (Film, music video or animation)?
This will help me in my production because I don't have dialogue so I will need to focus on the techniques he has discussed so that I can make the story as clear as possible instead of having an unexplained story that has no plot.

Discuss what you know about the situation from the colour tone?
The colour is very grey and dark. This can show us that the main character is in a repetitive (and boring) loop that we can only assume is his job. The colour makes him look very ill or tired, this tells us he is probably in an office job doing admin. What do we know about the character from the setting? The background is an office and he is stood at a printer, this tells the audience that he is in an office job doing paper work. We can all assume that this is incredibly boring and not great pay. What does the way he is dressed tell us about him? He is in just a t-shirt and a tie with his sleeves rolled up, this tells us he is not enjoying his job as he does not dress himself proud. His sleeves being rolled up tells us he expects to HAVE to do work. We hear the sound of the hole for the first time - what does it make you think of? The sound they use for the hole sound like an electro-magnet, this makes us think of space which would connect to the idea of a black hole. Because it is an unnatural sound we recognise it as unnatural. What does the sound represent? As I said above the sound represents something not of this earth and makes us think it is something form space. 2.18 in - What do we feel about this situation? At 2.18 we are still unsure what this 'black hole' actually is or does. This frame tells us that he is still unsure but that he wants to test it out. Are we glad? =================================== What are your feelings towards the character? We feel happy for the character because he's finally got a bit of luck, however towards the end we fell like he gets what he deserves having been to greedy. Why? - he hasn't said anything? From the colours, the camera angles and his facial expression we can decide what sort of person we think they are and also what sort of life they have. |
What season are we in?
From the sounds I am hearing, the season is either Autumn of Winter because I can hear the sounds of leaves or snow. What country are we in? The music playing sounds like French music so I would assume we are in France or somewhere surrounding. Is the character happy or sad? From the music and the pace of the characters steps and also how they are whistling, to me it sounds happy. What is he doing? The sounds tell me that he is just walking along enjoying life. The fact that he is whistling tells me his brain is not focused on what is happening, but rather just being happy. What do the Foley sounds tell us? The foley sounds in this part of the video tell us what sort of surface she is on and also what he doing with his hands. For this instance you can hear her put her hand to what I presume to be a window as it makes a deep bump noise. The music tells us that the story has taken a turn and it sounded like surprise to me Does the music change and how does it change the mood? Yes, as I said above it changes the mood to a more surprised attitude and almost something she didn't want to see or something that freaked her out a little bit What do we feel about the characters? At the end we feel sorry for the characters as they acted completely innocent, however before we know the ending the sounds tell us that she maybe is to inquisitive. What is your understanding of the narrative? From what I heard she is walking down either a street or a hallway and she stops to write at a blackboard, she then goes on and see's something she wished she hadn't. Shen then hits a window and later hits either the window or a door with a snowball. A door then opens straight away and from the sound of the footsteps I gather that she walks indoors. Later she knocks some sort of clockwork thing at it just goes mental. The only other think I hear is like a glass eye or something ticking about. |
In this video they use colour to its full potential to create emotion for the main character. The contrast and corruption in society as people expect it to be male and females together and don't and think
The colour of the two main characters are resemblance of peace and love as they are bold bright colours In this scene the colour of the two people are red and blue, the reason they are red and blue is to show us that the "norm" is male and female relationships and this video is to show that gay marriage is right The change of tone is used to show his feeling and his emotion towards men instead of women, we understand this due to the transitions we see. One of the most significant scene is the dark room, this is used to show that he is depressed and upset. |
The narrative in this short film is Linear with flashbacks. This works for the storyline as he is talking about what he remembers. This Short Film does not fit directly into Todorov's narrative theory, however it takes elements of it to improve it.
Equilibrium - In this particular film there is no equilibrium as it jumps straight into the interrogation room. This can be used to show how even he doesn't know what happened and you learn with him about the events in this short film.
Disruption - This Film starts here. As it starts in the interrogation room their life is immediately disrupted, this can throw the viewer off. I think this is done on purpose because it makes the viewer just as confused as the character. This keeps the trend of the first point that you are learning as the character learns giving you the same opinions and making you just as confused as him.
Recognition - The main character realises what has happened and how he is suspect for manslaughter. You find this out through flashbacks as they go to the house and search it. Throughout this film he thinks he is innocent to realise that through flashbacks he did it but he still didn't't recognise it was him, this could be because it was a side of him that he didn't believe existed.
Repair - They go to the house and look around figuring out and matching it to the story they were given. This is when he really understands that he was the culprit, however everyone else in this see him as innocent other than one person who is kind of his exact twin but sees him as guilty. The casting for this is perfect and this is why it works so well.
New Equilibrium - They slowly understand what has happened and accept the truth and move on. This is a key moment, other than the one character that for some reason hates him, we don't know who this is though, everyone see's him as someone who did something wrong and from what I can gather they think he has a mental illness which we also don't know but we the viewer can infer this from how they treat him.

In this film the use of sound is very significant, for example the music used is used to create tension, this is used incredibly well as there is many different scores.
From this I will make sure my production has lots of music that helps build tension within the genre of thriller. Because there is no dialogue I will need to rely on music and sound to tell the viewer what Is happening, how it is happening and why. The music will play an even bigger role in changing the audiences mood and will decide on how they see the characters.

Character Studies
Propp's theory is where every character has a purpose and is in the story for a reason. This is particularly important for our production as how characters look and act will be the only way for people to figure out who they are.
The typical characters are: -The Protagonist (The Hero) -The Antagonist (The Villan) -The Donor -The Sidekick (The Helper) -The Princess -The Princess' Father -The Dispatcher -The Usurper (The False Hero) |
All of these people form these photos have been casted to their roles purely from looks alone. This is key to telling a story with no dialogue.

Location Scouting
Short Film
-Shiplake Garden Centre
This location suits our short film as it is old and abandoned just like our main characters storyline, it is a physical representation of his feelings. -Country Lane This would fit in at the start as it has two sides and is a perfect location for a changing point in the story line. It can be bright and happy but also change any second and this is what we plan to use it for. -House This is seen as a safe location and would work at the end when the child feels safe however we can also make it look ominous which will be useful for early on flashbacks. |
Music Video
-House
As i said above a house is seen as a safe place, this is perfect for a romantic genre and will benefit the feelings towards the characters. -River The river is part of the song and also show gentle movement and then big rushes just like the relationship we are presenting. -Park The park is a sign of enjoyment for anyone who sees it, We want to use it to show progression and enjoyment. this keeps the genre on track and shows the viewer something relatable. |
